Athens, the capital of Greece and one of the oldest cities in the world, has been continuously inhabited since 3000 BC. It boasts the heritage of its mighty civilization and empire and is considered the historical capital of Europe. Athens' historic center, the Acropolis, is the most coveted walk for ancient history and heritage. The high point of this city is a visit to the marble Parthenon, which once housed the large gold ivory statue of Athena. Thessaloniki, the Greek port, has been rebuilt with a modern European layout but still preserves the historical remains of Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires.
