Athens sights and attractions

Embodying centuries of history that goes all the way back to the Neolithic age, Athens owes its name to Athena, the goddess of wisdom, and is as rich in history as it is in cultural diversity. Brimming with historical relics and archeological sites, a walk around the old city tells the story of its position at the centre of Ancient Greece and its rulers through the ages. While the city is overflowing with world-famous historic sights, there is more to the city yet to discover through its vibrant markets and commercial areas, world-class cultural and entertainment scene and thriving nightlife.

What to do in Athens

With so many attractions, it can be difficult to know where to start. Luckily much of the historic area of Athens is in a compact pedestrianized zone that leads to many of the city's main archeological highlights. Bordering that is the old commercial area of Athens and downtown, where many of the city's markets, museums and important monuments can also be found.

On a city break in Athens, be sure to:

  • See the Acropolis and Parthenon temple, Athens' most iconic sight
  • Visit the Acropolis Museum and marvel at one of the most extensive collections of ancient Greek art anywhere in the world
  • Spend some time at the Byzantine Museum to learn about this period in Greece's history
  • Walk around the Agora, the ancient marketplace and centre of ancient Greek life
  • Gaze at the Temple of Olympian Zeus, a colossal monument with elements dating back to the 6th century BC
  • Wander through the bustling pedestrian streets of the Plaka neighborhood and stop for dinner
  • Stroll through the tranquil National Garden, a green haven in the centre of the city
  • Climb up to the top of Mount Lycabettus at sunset for beautiful panoramic views
  • See the changing of the guards in Syntagma Square every Sunday
  • Visit the National Archaeological Museum and discover archaeological finds that date back to the 7th millennium
