Gran Canaria sights and attractions

With a truly stunning setting off the northwestern coast of Africa, Gran Canaria is the third largest of the Canary Islands, and often likened to a "mini continent" due to its varied terrain and myriad of contrasting sights. Year round mild weather means that visitors can explore the island's natural wonders no matter what the season. Hike through a world biosphere reserve, discover dramatic landscapes, visit ancient archeological findings or simply kick-back on the beach (after all, there are nearly 40 miles of sparkling sand to choose from). The island is also a hit with foodies for its exemplary fresh seafood and tapas.

What to do in Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria's miles of pristine beaches provide plenty of water sports and fun for sun seekers and families alike, but there is more to the island than sand and surf. The island's capital, Las Palmas, boasts a UNESCO-protected historic quarter, pretty stone villages dot the rolling hills of the interior, and the island's natural parks showcase scenery of unparalleled beauty. For fun when the sun goes down, head to the lively Playa del Ingles, where you can party well into the night.

During your stay in Gran Canaria, be sure to:

  • Try to find one of the oldest wine presses on the island in the Caldera de Bandama in Tafira
  • Meander through the picturesque streets of the Agüimes' historic quarter
  • Discover one of the island's oldest towns at Teror
  • Walk in the footsteps of Columbus as you stroll through Vegueta, the old city centre of Las Palmas
  • Stride through the soft dunes of Maspalomas
  • Trek through mountain peaks to the Roque Nublo volcanic rock, near Tejeda
  • Try windsurfing or kite-surfing, a popular island sport
  • Dine on fresh seafood in the charming fishing village, Puerto de Las Nieves
  • Visit the surreal Sioux City near San Agustin to experience a slice of the American Wild West
  • Stretch your legs along the waterfront of Puerto Mogan
