Mexico City sights and attractions

Mexico City is located at the heart of Mexico. A vast, thriving metropolis and one of the most densely populated cities in the world, it is Mexico's political, cultural, educational, and financial hub. Founded by the Aztecs, the city is as much known for its rich cultural heritage as for its contemporary arts scene and vibrant nightlife, and the sheer number of fascinating sights and attractions that draw visitors to the city are staggering. Discover ancient Aztec relics, delve into the life and works of Frida Kahlo, soak up the city's unique culture, and try mouth-wateringly diverse cuisine. However you choose to spend your time, you are bound to create unforgettable memories.

What to do in Mexico City

Despite the fact that the city is made up of 16 boroughs and more than 300 neighborhoods, many of the city's attractions are located in the central historic districts, which are dotted with notable museums, churches, galleries, and monuments. Journey a little way north from the city centre to discover an ancient Aztec past at the pyramids of Teotihuacan, listen to mariachi music or head to the Polanco neighborhood for some of the city's best nightspots.

While in Mexico City, be sure to:

  • Walk through La Plaza de la Constitución (or Zócalo) and see the colossal Metropolitan Cathedral and National Palace
  • Stroll through the verdant Bosque de Chapultepec, the Western Hemisphere's biggest park and stop by the splendid Museum of Anthropology
  • Gaze at the elaborate beauty of the Art Nouveau Palacio de las Bellas Artes
  • Ride on a trajineras (Mexican-style boat) around the canals of Xochimilco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Gain insight into the life and work of one of Mexico's most celebrated artists at the Frida Kahlo Museum
  • Visit the Basilica de Guadeloupe, one of the world's most sacred sites
  • Take a tour of the pyramids at the Teotihuacan archeological site
