About Avianca
Avianca was the first commercial airline founded in America and the second founded in the world. The company was established on 5th December 1919 under the name "Sociedad Colombo-Alemana de Transporte Aéreo" in Barranquilla (Colombia). The first flight operated by the company took off from Barranquilla to Puerto Colombia in a Junker F13. The aircraft carried passengers and mail. At that stage, Avianca's fleet was made up of 2 Junker aircrafts that, due to the country's topography, were fitted with floats, allowing them to land on rivers when necessary.
In the mid 20's, the company opened international routes to Venezuela and the United States. The airline's name was changed to Avianca in 1940. Today, Avianca's fleet has increased to 49 aircrafts and covers 18 destinations in Colombia and 17 more in the rest of America and Europe.
Headquartered in Bogota, Avianca offers 220 flights daily and operates over 6,000 connections, including direct flights and code share agreements with partner airlines like Air Canada, Iberia and Delta Air Lines. Avianca's goal for 2010 is to become the main airline in Latin America. www avianca com
