To and from the airports

Flights from Rome

Rome is Italy's capital and one of the oldest cities in the world. Rome is primarily served by Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport and secondarily by Ciampino–G. B. Pastine International Airport. Rome Ciampino Airport is one of the oldest airports in the world and began its operations in 1916. Fiumicino Airport began to operate in 1961.

Flights from Rome to Santorini may take off from either Fiumicino Airport or Ciampino Airport. Fiumicino Airport is named after the famous renaissance-era painter, Leonardo da Vinci, who was Italian. Ciampino Airport is named after the suburb in which it is located; it was Rome's primary airport until Fiumicino Airport was constructed.

Getting to Rome airport

To catch flights to Santorini, confirm the name of the airport from which your flight is leaving. If your flight is taking off from Fiumicino Airport, you can board Trenitalia's Leonardo Express at Termini Station. The journey takes just 30 minutes. There are also buses and taxis available to the airport from all corners of the city. If your flight is leaving from Ciampino Airport, consider yourself lucky as it is located just 12 kilometers from Rome's historical center. The easiest way to get to this airport is by taking a bus from outside the Termini railway station.

Getting to Santorini

If you are looking sun, sea and sand, Santorini is the right place. Located in the southern Aegean Sea, Santorini is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Greece. Discover the unique architecture of Fira, Santorini's capital, where well-maintained gardens adorn white-washed houses. Visit one of the many volcanic islands that lie strewn around Santorini. Visit the beaches, take a walk through the narrow lanes of Athinios port, and gorge on local delicacies such as fava, cod fillet and melitinia cookies. Santorini, which is also famous for its wine industry, is a great place to purchase exotic wines such as mezzo, nykteri and vinsanto.

Arriving to the city centre

Your Rome to Santorini flight will land at Santorini National Airport, nearly seven kilometers from Fira's town center. Fira, which is the capital of Santorini island, serves as a good base to explore the rest of the island and nearby islets. To get to Fira city center from the airport, take one of the scheduled buses from the airport. The journey takes nearly 30 minutes to reach downtown Fira. There are usually five buses a day to Fira city center, but unscheduled trips are possible depending on flight arrivals. Another option is to hail a taxi, which can cost quite a lot.
