How can I find hotels in Madrid?

Madrid is often nicknamed the 'city that never sleeps' so it's easy to find time to enjoy many of this city's exciting attractions whether you're visiting for a weekend break or staying for longer. As the home of Spain's royal family for several centuries, wealth was lavished on Madrid creating streets full of monumental buildings topped with ornately gilded domes and statues. Interspersing these are pretty plazas perfect for people-watching over coffee and cocktails and large green spaces such as the Parque del Buen Retiro. One of Madrid's claim to fame is the sheer amount of art collected within a short space of just half a mile or so. The masterpieces of Goya, Velazquez, Dali, Miro and Picasso along with works from around the world are housed in the Museo del Prado, the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia and the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisz. To make the most of your time in these world-class galleries book a hotel in Madrid near the museums. When you stay in cheap hotels in the centre of Madrid you are also close to the city's rich culinary culture. While tasty tapas can still be found everywhere, many restaurants have blended traditional Spanish dishes with contemporary world cuisine to create an exciting fusion. Use the eDreams intuitive search filters to find hotel deals in one of Europe's most fascinating cities.

What to see in Madrid?

Although Madrid is a large and populous capital, its historic heart is remarkably easy to explore on foot. If you choose a hotel in Madrid near Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol or Gran Via you will have everything you need and want on the doorstep. Start your exploration of Madrid in Puerta del Sol (the Gate of the Sun) once the entry point to the royal city. Look down to see a point marking the geographical centre of the Iberian peninsula. Near Sol is the long and distinguished Gran Via. Now a place for window and souvenir shopping, this street was once lined with grand palaces. In fact, many shops are worth popping into just to admire their palatial interiors and sweeping staircases. If you look up you'll see Baroque cupolas and Art Deco touches. Take a tour of the grand Palacio Real, home of the royal family since the mid-18th century before visiting the Santa María la Real de la Almudena with its cathedral museum. When it's time for lunch head to Plaza Mayor, a grandiose square with a not-so-nice history.

Where to stay in Madrid?

Move away from the aristocratic architecture of central Madrid to the grittier streets of Malasaña and Chueca where you'll find the locals living, shopping and enjoying the nightlife. These barrios have attitude, with global shopping names, designer stores and quirky individual shops sitting alongside a wealth of culinary experiences from around the globe. It's also a good area for cheap hotels and hostels. Meandering up from Puerta del Sol are the streets of Santa Ana and Huertas. This is where Madrid's nightlife continues from dusk to dawn but it's also an area where you can enjoy a coffee and beer in the pretty Plaza de Santa Ana or explore the literary heritage of Lope de Vega and Cervantes in the Barrio de las Letras. If you want a hotel in Madrid somewhere a little more tranquil then look slightly east to the long stretch of Arturo Soria and the streets around it.
