Its first flight took off on September 19, 1946 on a route from Lisbon to Madrid. In 2005, TAP entered into the Star Alliance. Currently, TAP is the leading airline in the Portuguese market, based in Lisbon and operating to 78 international destinations in Africa, North America and South America. TAP has a fleet of 55 aircraft, consisting exclusively of Airbus. In 2006 the company acquired Portugalia, the country's second largest airline.
