How to book and fly with special luggage?

We all have some type of travel luggage when we travel. It might be a suitcase, a backpack or a carry-on; our baggage is important to us. It’s how we travel.

Yet, some of us need to take special baggage. Whether you’re taking your surf board to catch some waves in Peru, bringing your guitar while you backpack Southeast Asia or you’re simply taking your ski equipment for slopes in Whistler, Canada, it’s important to know about the rules and regulations from different airlines.




Which airlines allow you to fly with special baggage?


Aer Lingus


Aer Lingus let you fly with sports equipment such as: golf bags, diving equipment, fishing articles, skis, snowboards, and bicycles; and for your musical instrument either you checked it, book a seat for it or carry it in cabin if it's small.

Sports Equipment

If you have booked online, you can add sports equipment online too! Aer Lingus will take your sports equipment as checked baggage with the maximum allowed of 23 kg (50 lbs) and one piece per passenger. When flying to and from North America, the sports equipment is part of the standard baggage allowance. You’ll have to pay $100 if it exceeds the maximum weight, per passenger each way. For other Aer Lingus routes, the fee will be either 40€ (online) or 50€ (reservations center at airport) per passenger per direction. Business Class passengers get their sports equipment free of charge. This airline accepts golf bags, bicycles, sports guns, diving equipment, fishing equipment, surfboards, windsurfing equipment, skis, and snowboards.

Musical Instruments

If you want to bring your music on your trip, it's possible with Aer Lingus! Smaller musical instruments with dimensions of 55 x 40 x 24 cm for regular flights and 48 x 33 x 20 cm for regional flights can be taken on board as cabin baggage allowance free of charge. It's permitted to buy an additional seat for mid-sized instruments, but must not exceed 75 kg and 94 x 58 x 41 cm. Big instruments such as harps, drums, and double bass need to be checked in; if you're traveling to/from North America is imported as standard baggage allowance, but if not, then it will cost you 40€ via online or 50€ in the airport.

Wheelchairs and Strolleys

A stroller with a car seat, booster seat or travel cot is allowed costless for an infant or child booking. Also, wheelchairs travel for free, but they must not exceed 120 kg and can not contain wet-cell batteries.

Oversized & Special Baggage

You are allowed 20kg check in allowance free of charge and can upgrade to 25kg if needed. You can combine this weight over two bags. However, if you need more than this you will have excess baggage and excess baggage is charged at €10 per kilo.

Air Europa


Spain’s third largest airline, Air Europa, relies on the acceptance of the crew to allow passengers to bring special baggage. This will depend on the space and weight available on boarding. To take special items as cabin baggage, it will be the same cost as a seat. It must not exceed the maximum measurements allowed in the cabin or it will be carried as airfreight.

Sports Equipment

For sporting equipment like bicycles, scuba diving equipment, rods and professional hunting weapons the cost is $75 extra. For surfing, paragliding, and hand gliding over 115cm, it’s an extra $150. For fishing, golf, and skiing under 115cm, require no extra charge than the standard $150 for special baggage.

Musical Instruments

The same as the sports equipment, if the musical instrument is under 115 cm, does not require extra charge. You can use this as one standard baggage item. However, if the musical instrument is over 115 cm you'll pay a fare of $150.

Wheelchairs and Strolleys

If assisted mobility devices including chairs, walkers, sticks, crutches, and others can't be hold on within the cabin, they need to be checked-in and transferred within the craft hold. Anyhow, passengers are allowed to stay with the devices with them throughout boarding till they reach the plane, wherever they need to tend to the Air Europa arranger for storage in the hold. Mobility devices must not weigh more than 150kg for A330 or A373-800 aircrafts while for E195 aircrafts they must not exceed 100kg. Mobility devices must not weigh more than 150kg for A330 or A373-800 aircrafts while for E195 aircrafts they must not excel 100kg.

Oversized & Special Baggage

For medium-haul flights, each piece that exceeds 23 kg over allowance will require a fee of $50 in advance or $60 at the airport. If you are flying to Dakar, you are not allowed to bring additional luggage. For long-haul flights, 2nd piece/51 lb (23 kg) over allowance: $50 in advance or $60 at the airport.
3rd piece/51 lb (23 kg) over allowance: $100 in advance or $150 at the airport.
Luggage that weighs beyond 71 lb (32 kg) will not be welcomed.

Alaska Airlines


Alaska Airlines is one of the United States premier airlines with routes to over 115 destinations across North America. They are flexible as they allow a variety of sports equipment, and you can bring a baggage up to 46kg (quite a lot!)

Sports Equipment

Alaska Airlines, an American airline headquartered in Seattle, has a refreshing stance on sports equipment in particular and waive most sports items as checked baggage, as long as it is packed in its appropriate soft or hard case. This includes archery, bicycles, boogie boards, bowling, golf clubs, skis, snowboards, fishing gear, hockey, pole vaults, scuba gear, skateboards, surfboards, paddleboards and windsurfing equipment. There’s quite the list! Additional baggage fees may apply if anything different on the list for sports equipment.

Musical Instruments

For musical instruments, it varies for Alaska Airlines. Small instruments for carry on cannot exceed the size limit that is 22 x 14 x 9 cm. For large instruments, you will need to purchase a seat for it. To check in any of your musical instruments, Alaska Airlines focus on the weight and dimensions. Anything between 22-75kg will incur a $75 USD charge while if it’s over 63” (linear) it will warrant an extra $75 USD too.

Wheelchairs and Strolleys

Wheelchair and mobility devices can be checked in free of charge if you decide to bring your own, however there are mobility devices supplied by the airline if told in advance. Your own devices must not exceed 83cm x 86cm and have a maximum weight of 226kg.

Oversized & Special Baggage

Alaska Airlines will not accept baggage exceeding 46kg, however if you are between 24kg - 46kg it will be $100 USD for an additional bag.

American Airlines


American Airlines considers special baggage as many items including anything from audio equipment, firearms, human remains, sports baggage, military baggage, musical instruments and mobility devices.

Sports Equipment

American Airlines has an extensive list of sports equipment they accept. With them, you can carry starting from archery stuff, bikes, bowling balls, golf clubs, gymnastic equipment, hockey or cricket kits to skateboards, windsurf, tent, skis, boogie and others. You name it! The size, weight, and cost differ depending on the element. For some, you have to pay the same fee as the first or second bag and for others, it is an established cost.

Musical Instruments

You can travel with small musical instruments as your carry-on item on a first come, first serve basis so make sure to arrive early and board promptly. The maximum size for checked musical instruments is 381 cm and the maximum weight is 75 kg. If it's larger or bulkier will be send by cargo.

Wheelchairs and Strolleys

If you are traveling with a mobility or medical device, is expected to notice 48 hours before. The doors to the wheelchair storage area are 25in high x 40in wide (63cm x 101cm), with some smaller at 25in x 38in. If you have a larger wheelchair, contact American Airlines Reservations. If you travel with children, you are granted with one car seat and one stroller free of charge, but only one can be checked at the gate. Should not be heavier than 20 lbs (9kgs).

All items are not allowed to exceed 45kg heavy or by 320cm (length, width and height). Fees apply per person, are non refundable and additional fees may apply.

British Airways


British Airways allows you to include your sporting or musical instruments in your free baggage allowance. Nonetheless, depending on the weight and size, extra airline baggage fees maybe warranted.

Sports Equipment

Sporting items have a dimension limit of 190 x 75 x 65cm as long as they don’t exceed your permitted baggage weight limit. If the dimensions are larger, the special luggage will be classified as cargo. Some items over 23 kg may incur in a heavy bag charge. British Airways authorize bikes, diving equipment, golf clubs, firearms, ski, snowboards, surfboards and rackets as sporting gear, if not listed you should contact them.

Musical Instruments

Violas, violins or small wind instruments can be taken as part of free cabin baggage allowance. The maximum dimensions are 80 x 45 x 25cm. If it is larger than this size, large instruments and cases can be carried in the hold or an extra seat can be purchased. For vast musical instruments, the weight limit is 23 kg or 45 kg with extra charge and height limit of 190 x 75 x 65cm.

Wheelchairs and Strolleys

British Airways advise to tell them in advance of your requirements, whether you are taking your own mobility device or needing to use one of theirs. Dimensions for wheelchairs and mobility devices vary. From London to Europe it's 140 x 85 x 106 cm (length, width, height) while to the rest of the world the dimensions are 140 x 85 x 152 cm. For families traveling with kids with checked baggage allowance, you can choose two of the following without charge: stroller, car or booster seat, travel cot or baby back carrier.

Oversized & Special Baggage

If you exceed 32kg, this is classed as excess baggage and will need to be delivered via cargo. The price is from $9, 8€, or £7 per kg.

Delta


Delta, one of the United States major airlines, agrees that special items are baggage, too. They understand special luggage comes in all shapes and sizes and are flexible to carry this sort of luggage on board; they even have a special allowance for Christmas trees!

Special luggage if used as carry on must not exceed 45kg if purchasing a ticket. This would be suitable for something too fragile to store in the hold.

Sports Equipment

Sports equipment is allowed but extra airline baggage fees will apply to anything oversized or weight. Antlers, archery, bicycles, boogie boards, canoes, kayaks, fishing gear, golf equipment, hockey material, javelins, kiteboards, wakeboards, parachutes, scuba items, shooting equipment, skateboards, ski, snowboard, surfboard, vaulting poles and windsurfing boards can be taken in Delta flights.

Musical Instruments

Checking in musical instruments have a weight limit allowance of 75kg while its total linear dimensions do not exceed 381 cm. If you’re flying on the 767-300 to or from Narita International Airport in Tokyo, Japan, music instruments have a dimension limit of 200 cm. Small instruments can be considered as free carry on bags.

Wheelchairs and Strolleys

Prior to your flight and in advance you must fill out a Wheelchair Handling Form with Delta. You need to bring this with you for the flight. The dimensions to stow your wheelchair must not exceed 33 x 91 x 106 cm. Despite, this can vary slightly depending on the aircraft. Children’s strollers and seat restraints aren't take into account as a part of the standard baggage and thus will simply be checked for complimentary. For your advantage, this stuff is also checked at curbside, the ticket counter, or at the gate.

Oversized & Special Baggage

Delta will charge a fare of $100 USD if excess baggage is between 24-32kg while if it's between 33kg and 46kg you'll be charged double, $200 USD. Anything over 46kg will not be accepted.

Easyjet


One of Britain’s most economically friendly low-cost carriers, easyJet, has some fantastic flight prices with the main destinations in Europe. Even though, it's a low cost airline, they authorize special baggage suchlike sports, music, wheelchairs, strolleys and oversized.

Sports Equipment

For special luggage, easyJet allows you to bring one piece of sports equipment per person. Small and large sports equipment has a maximum weight of 20kg and 32kg respectively that includes golf clubs, skis, snowboards, canoes and kayaks.

Musical Instruments

Taking musical instruments into the cabin must have a dimension limit of 30 x 120 x 38 cm and must be stored in the overhead locker. A perk to taking an instrument with easyJet is if you’re carrying your instrument as your only carry on luggage and cannot fit everything into it, you can bring a small bag for free. Instruments with dimensions larger than 30 x 120 x 38 cm has to go into the hold and is going to be added as extra hold luggage to your booking.

Wheelchairs and Strolleys

This airline accepts two items of mobility baggage per traveler freed from charge, like wheelchairs or mobility aids. Sporting wheelchairs may be included in this allowance. Wheelchairs and mobility that cannot be lifted manually into the aircraft hold will only be accepted for travel if both airports can provide the facilities to load and unload the device. easyJet's minimum seat dimensions are 72.5 cm x 44 cm. If you're unable to fit into one seat with the above dimensions for any reason you may be needed to buy extra seats at the prevailing rates to accommodate your needs. For children and infants, it's possible to bring two pieces costless from the following list: pushchair, travel cot, buggy, double pushchair, car seat, collapsible or non-collapsible pram, booster seat or baby back carrier.

Bags must not exceed 32kg with easyJet. If this happens, easyJet will charge an extra $8 or 9€ or £10 per kg, one way.

Eurowings


One of Germany’s low cost airline, Eurowings take care of their own. If you’re a German credit card holder and paid for your flight online with that credit card, you can add sports equipment free of charge.

Sports Equipment

While every passenger must pay a surcharge for larger sports equipment items such as bicycles or surfboards, this service is free for Eurowings credit card holders and their companions – provided they have booked their flight online and paid for it with a Eurowings credit card. You can add your sports equipment online or by phone. Charge per equipment is 50€ for short and medium flights and 100€ for long flights. In case that you are traveling for skying, it's chargeless!

Musical Instruments

If you have musical instrument that is smaller than a guitar then you can take it as carry on if it is in a soft case. If it’s larger than a guitar, then you’ll have to put it in the hold in a hard case!

Wheelchairs and Strolleys

Eurowings will take your wheelchair or mobility device free of cost, as long as you have notified them in advance. They are only allowed to take 5 wheelchairs per flight apart from to and from the United States, where there is no limit. You may check one pram, pushchair, child safety seat or travel cot per child without any cost.

Oversized & Special Baggage

Eurowings will charge a payment of 50€ in addition to the checked baggage fee for bags that are greater than the standard 32 kilograms or up to 41 kilograms. Eurowings will not transport oversize suitcases.

jetBlue


The New York City low-cost airline, Jetblue, accepts sports equipment and count towards checked baggage limitation but will be subject to a charge as excess baggage. Recently, airline baggage fees have changed from the 27th of August 2018. If you’ve purchased a ticket before this date, check with the airline in advance about the fees.

Sports Equipment

Jetblue's policy for sports equipment is quite flexible. You can bring baseball equipment, bicycles, bowling articles, drones, fishing kit, spear guns, golfing equipment, hockey sticks, ice skates, kitesurfs, parachutes, razor type scoooter, scuba gear, selfie sticks, tripods, skateboards, ski, snowboards, skimboard, tennis rackets and windsurfing.

Musical Instruments

There isn't any oversize or overweight fee for musical instruments, as long as they do not exceed 150 linear inches, 165 pounds (75 kg) or the applicable size or weight restrictions for the airplane. Musical instruments such as upright basses, cellos and some guitars of a size that prevents the instrument from being handled as traditional carry‐on baggage will be accepted within the cabin provided an extra seat has been purchased for the instrument. For carry-on, a musical instrument is allowed in place of one carry‐on item, provided it can be stowed properly under the seat or in an overhead bin. Although the standard carry‐on baggage size limitations do not apply to musical instruments, if the musical instrument cannot be stored onboard due space constraints, it must be checked at the gate.

Wheelchairs and Strolleys

Wheelchairs can be included on Jetblues A320/A321 can not be talled than the cargo door of 121 cm. You are limited to two wheelchairs per person. You will need to be in the boarding area prior to the general boarding and must take advantage of preboard courtesy. You can fly with one stroller and one car seat without charge.

If you have bags that are oversized exceeding 23 kg with JetBlue and up to 46 kg there will be a $150 USD charge. The same cost applies for any additional or third baggage too. Moreover, for the size dimensions of bags between 158 cm to 203 cm.

KLM


The Netherlands flagship airline KLM requires you to reserve any special baggage at least 48 hours before departure. Also, KLM treats its Business Class passengers with an extra 9 kg totalling to 32 kg, for checked in items like musical instruments, where as for Economy Class passengers it is 23 kg.

If you’re getting married abroad and are taking your wedding dress you can take it into the cabin as long as it’s in a clothing bag and doesn’t exceed the weight and size restrictions.

Sports Equipment

Some checked items will be charged a fixed handling fee because of size, fragility, or other handling requirements. The maximum dimensions are 153 cm while weight for Economy is 23 kg and Business Class is 32 kg. Bicycles, tandems, golf bags, skis, snowboards, surfing equipment, diving gear, fishing equipment and hunting stuff are accepted.

Musical Instruments

You can bring your musical instrument instead of a suitcase or instead of an extra suitcase according to KLM. Your musical instrument may weigh maximum 23 kg in Economy Class and maximum 32 kg in Business Class. You should pack it in a hard case. An extra fee applies if your instrument is larger than 158 cm or weighs more than 23 kg. Additionally, you can purchase an extra seat for your instrument, but it can be no longer than 140 cm and 45 kg.

Bring your own wheelchair chargeless and make your reservation at least 48 hours before departure. If your manual wheelchair is collapsible or dismountable, you can bring it as hand baggage as long as it doesn’t exceed the maximum dimensions of 33 x 92 x 107 cm (13 x 36 x 42 in). Each piece of check-in baggage outside your free allowance could weigh up to 23 kgs or 50.5 lbs. For each piece of check-in baggage that weighs more than 32 kg (70.5 lbs), you'll ought to pay a fee and have it transported as cargo. Ryanair


The low-cost airline has been renowned for its infamous baggage policies in the past, however changes have been made since. As a non-priority customer, from the 1st of November 2018 you can take one small carry-on bag (40 x 20 x 25 cm) for free. If you’re a priority customer then you can take two bags on for free. This is also for bookings made after 1st of September 2018.

Sports Equipment

For special items like a bike, the maximum weight is 30 kg. For other sports such as ski or golf the maximum weight is 20 kg. All incur additional costs per piece from 35€ to 60€ online or 40€ to 65€ at the airport.

Musical Instruments

Musical Instruments cannot exceed 20 kg per item. It costs 55€ per item one way if you book online or 65€ if you book at the airport.

Wheelchairs and Strolleys

Wheelchairs or mobility devices must not exceed 150 kg for safety reasons. There is no charge for this. Ryanair do provide a wheelchair on board every aircraft if needed. The dimensions of the wheelchair when collapsed must not exceed 81 cms (height), 119 cms (width) and 119 cms (depth) if you decide to bring your own. When flying with Ryanair, you can pack two pieces of baby equipment costless per child including 1 pushchair plus one of the following items:car seat or booster seat or travelcot.

Excess baggage per kilogram is 10€ while it costs 50€ total for a declaration of a valuable of special baggage.

Transavia


The Dutch low-cost airline requires any special luggage to be reported in advance from 3 weeks to 48 hours before. Transavia is quite open when it comes to special luggage, as they understand it may be required.

You can pack your wedding dress or suit, an urn or a drone in your hand luggage. Additionally, they accept sporting weapons and trekking poles as hold luggage.

Sports Equipment

If you’re going golfing, skiing, snowboarding, scuba diving or fishing the maximum limit is 15 kg. If you are traveling with water sports equipment suchlike surfboard, waveboard, kitesurfing board or bodyboard, hand gliding and a bicycle, the maximum limit is 32 kg.

Musical Instruments

Musical instruments can weight no more than 10 kg for carry on with dimensions of 25 x 117 x 38 while large instruments for the hold have a maximum weight of 20 kg with a 110 x 44 x 65 dimension limit.

Wheelchairs and Strolleys

Transavia specifically require a minimum of 48 hours notice if you need wheelchairs on board. They also ask if the wheelchair you are bringing is over 23 kg or 86 cm tall that you contact them to see if you can still able to bring it on board. You can take a trolley, pram or folding buggy as hold luggage for your child.

For Transavia passengers, if more luggage is taken over the 32 kg than booked, the charges will be 15€ per 5kg extra.

United Airlines


The Chicago based airline recently changed its rules on Lithium Batteries: as of July 2018 they must be removed from installation as checked luggage. United Airlines understands and approves special baggage.

Sports Equipment

For special sports luggage, you cannot pay for when checking in online with United Airlines; you must pay at the United Airlines counter at the departing airport. Generally, if the weight exceeds 23 kg then you'll have to pay excess overweight charges. Depending on the sports equipment all sizes will apply whether you can check in or carry with you onto the aircraft. Sports equipment included are: archery, baseball, bicycles, boogie, speed board, bowling, camping, fencing and kendo, firearms, fishing, golf, gymnastic, hand gliding, hockey, lacrosse, javelins, kiteboard, oars, paintball, parachute, parasail, pole vaulting case, pool cues, scuba, ice skates, rollerblades, skateboards, skis, snowboards, surfboards, wakeboards, paddleboards, tennis, wave ski, and windsurfing. A lot of things accepted!

Musical Instruments

The United Airlines baggage allowance rules express that musical instruments may be carried on board, along with a personal item, and stowed in the overhead locker or under the seat in front. If you bring an instrument to the gate that cannot be stored in the cabin, it must be checked with a $25 USD handling fee paid.

Wheelchairs and Strolleys

For wheelchair and mobility products, United Airlines must be notified 48 hours before departure but as checked in luggage requires no additional charge. Passengers with children, could take a stroller or folding wagon, and one car seat as complimentary.

If a bag exceeds the United Airlines baggage allowance, fees will be charged. These vary according to destination and the type of fare travelled on.

Virgin Atlantic


The British carrier is known to travel to a select few destinations, often across in the Caribbean and America area with some going into Africa and Asia.

Sports Equipment

If your sports equipment is an item, Virgin Atlantic accepts that you can include it into your checked baggage without any prior notice. However, the weight limit is 23 kg. If it’s more than this, Virgin Cargo can help you arrange a separate transportation of your sporting equipment. The following sports baggage are admitted: archery, bicycles, cricket, diving, fencing, fishing, golf, hockey, kitesurfing, lacrosse, parachuting, shooting (sporting rifles, pellet guns, crossbows), skis, snowboards, surfboard, boogie board, tennis, and ten pin bowling.

Musical Instruments

Each instrument may not exceed 75 kg (165 lb) and its center of mass should be no more than 30 cm (12 inches) above the top of the seat cushion. This is to make sure it doesn't fall onto anyone next to you (that could be awkward). You should contact the airline to book an extra seat for your instrument. You can put a large instrument in the hold, although you might need to pay an additional fee if it takes you over your check in baggage allowance.

Wheelchairs and Strolleys

Collapsable manual wheelchairs may be carried within the cabin on any aircraft that has dedicated storage space. You must contact the Virgin Atlantic Special Assistance team at least 48 hours before you flight so we can make sure this space is available for you. If there isn’t storage space and your manual wheelchair needs to go in the hold, you can check it in either at the check in desks or the departure gate. It's okay to transport one fully collapsible pushchair and a car seat.

Oversized & Special Baggage

This airline classify oversized baggage as an item that is larger than the standard baggage size of 90 x 75 x 43cm (35.5 x 29.5 x 16ins). If any of your bags are beyond 190 x 75 x 65cm (75 x 29.5 x 25.5in) or the three dimensions of a piece of luggage is over 330cm/130ins, you won’t be able to check them in as baggage, but you might be able to fly them as cargo. For bookings made after March 17, 2018, the fees for oversized baggage are $100 USD per item.

Wizz Air


The Hungarian low-cost airline has a baggage policy depending on season. Between December, January, April and June to September, it is classified as Peak Season. Airline baggage fees will be higher during this time. Dates will vary per year so it’s best to check the website to double-confirm. For low season airline baggage fees, any of the times outside of those dates will apply. Also, weight and whether you booked online will determine the fees. The options for weight baggage are 20 kg or 32 kg.

Sports Equipment

For sporting equipment there is a 30€ fee if you book online via the Wizz call center but if you do it at the airport it’s double the price at €60. This is per flight per bag and per passenger. Wizz Air allow the following: ski, snowboard, surf equipment, golf bags, jumping poles, bicycles, diving equipment, and antlers.

Musical Instruments

If the instrument including its carry case does not transcend the dimensions of 55 x 40 x 23 cm and the weight of 10 kg, it can be carried as your cabin luggage; instruments such as violins, violas, flutes, clarinets, and trumpets, ukuleles. The little musical instrument is your cabin bag and no other piece can be carried on board. Big instruments suchlike cellos, double bass, and harp should be checked in. Another option for instruments is to purchase a seat.

Wheelchairs and Strolleys

Wizz Air can accept up to 28 disabled passengers per flight, provided that a maximum of 10 passengers who require a wheelchair from check-in to the cabin seat, can be carried on the same aircraft. There are 36 available seats for disabled passengers on the Wizz Air Airbus A321 aircraft, and they can accept a maximum 12 passengers who require a wheelchair from check-in to the cabin seat. In case that an adult is traveling with an infant, they have costless prams and pushchairs.
