How to book and fly with special luggage?

We all have some type of travel luggage when we travel. It might be a suitcase, a backpack or a carry-on; our baggage is important to us. It’s how we travel.

Yet, some of us need to take special baggage. Whether you’re taking your surf board to catch some waves in Peru, bringing your guitar while you backpack Southeast Asia or you’re simply taking your ski equipment for slopes in Whistler, Canada, it’s important to know about the rules and regulations from different airlines.

Which airlines allow you to fly with special baggage?

      Aer Lingus

Aer Lingus let you fly with sports equipment such as: golf bags, diving equipment, fishing articles, skis, snowboards, and bicycles; and for your musical instrument either you checked it, book a seat for it or carry it in cabin if it's small.

      Sports Equipment

If you have booked online, you can add sports equipment online too! Aer Lingus will take your sports equipment as checked baggage with the maximum allowed of 23 kg (50 lbs) and one piece per passenger. When flying to and from North America, the sports equipment is part of the standard baggage allowance. You’ll have to pay $100 if it exceeds the maximum weight, per passenger each way. For other Aer Lingus routes, the fee will be either 40€ (online) or 50€ (reservations center at airport) per passenger per direction. Business Class passengers get their sports equipment free of charge. This airline accepts golf bags, bicycles, sports guns, diving equipment, fishing equipment, surfboards, windsurfing equipment, skis, and snowboards.

      Musical Instruments

If you want to bring your music on your trip, it's possible with Aer Lingus! Smaller musical instruments with dimensions of 55 x 40 x 24 cm for regular flights and 48 x 33 x 20 cm for regional flights can be taken on board as cabin baggage allowance free of charge. It's permitted to buy an additional seat for mid-sized instruments, but must not exceed 75 kg and 94 x 58 x 41 cm. Big instruments such as harps, drums, and double bass need to be checked in; if you're traveling to/from North America is imported as standard baggage allowance, but if not, then it will cost you 40€ via online or 50€ in the airport.

      Wheelchairs and Strolleys

A stroller with a car seat, booster seat or travel cot is allowed costless for an infant or child booking. Also, wheelchairs travel for free, but they must not exceed 120 kg and can not contain wet-cell batteries.

      Oversized & Special Baggage

You are allowed 20kg check in allowance free of charge and can upgrade to 25kg if needed. You can combine this weight over two bags. However, if you need more than this you will have excess baggage and excess baggage is charged at €10 per kilo.
